Ancestral Follower is an Enemy in Elden Ring. Ancestral Followers are brawny tribesmen versed in distinctive spiritual arts. These spectral bull-headed warriors seemingly come out of thin air or can be found chanting at braziers around Siofra River. These warriors attack with a variety of weapons - some wield a large axe, some a scythe, and others can swap between a hand axe and a longbow. A corporeal variation of this enemy can be found in Nokron, Eternal City.
Horned folk who eschew letters and metalworking. The ancestral followers keep their distance from the Erdtree, awaiting new buds. They are certain to sprout from their very flesh, and indeed, their souls.

Ancestral Follower Notes & Tips
- Ancestral Followers that wield a bow can spot you from a long distance. This, along with their arrows' high speed can make it difficult to dodge their incoming shots. If you find yourself dying often to these enemies, try breaking their line of sight, or approach them slowly, hiding behind objects each time they take a shot at you.
- Lore bits on the Ancestral Followers can be found on the descriptions for Fur Leggings and Ancestral Infant's Head.
- Like other enemies with light armour, they have low poise. Heavy melee attacks can easily break their posture allowing free hits or criticals.
- They are slow creatures, making it easier to flank and backstab them at close range. Depending on their location (like the River Siofra), they are often stationary, and can be stealthed around and ambushed.
- There are also Ancestral Follower Shamans in Nokron, Eternal City as well as the Consecrated Snowfield.
- In the 1.00 version of the game, there was a variant of Ancestral Followers and Shamans infested with Scarlet Rot, which were placed at the Grand Cloister. They were eventually replaced by Lesser Kindred of Rot (Pests) and the Ancestral Follower variants became unused content.

For the longest time, I thought these were bull-like minotaur creatures. I didn't know they were humanoids wearing horned helmets and fur.

Such a cool enemy that seems to have F all to do with the plot. Shame. Guess we just storm in and kill their spirit guardians and F off for no reason lol

These guys make Age of Mythology donkey noises sometimes, if you played Age of Mythology, you cant unhear it now.

Two hand a great axe jump heavy attack and hit them two more times they will go on a knee then crit them (good way to farm at level 25)
- Anonymous
Yeah sure it has low poise, except it has hyperarmor on 9 out of 10 attacks, and has one attack that ignore stagger, that, you guessed it, also give hyperarmor.

it took me over an hour to get the horns... i killed well over 200 lol

I love it when they suddenly charge at me instantly out of nowhere with no windup and take off 95% of my health before i can even react, real ****ing fun enemy design.

These aholes, the Stone Imps and the Rot Kindred man centipedes, should have a battle to claim the title of most blood vessel burstingly annoying mob. Honorable mentions go to Rats, Hawks and Dogs.
- Anonymous
One of the worst regular mobs besides those awful stone imps, can activate super armor at will, pulls off ridiculously damaging combos that can kill you in seconds or at least take off huge chunks of your health, has a charge that comes out super fast and does more absurd damage, don't forget those awful snipers in siofra river that never miss and always stagger and can snipe you from 100 km away, they're fine 1on1 but where there's one there's atleast 3 more nearby, these scumbags can just go die in a fire.
Despite how big these guys are they have an awful amount stance. They have under 40 so two jump attacks from anthing bigger than a dagger will stance break them.

So is it really not possible to get that badass horn greataxe in the second photo?

Has anyone else noticed when you or a ally phantom die to these things. They seem to get their own 'Runes' just a interesting detail to point out

High health, high poise, and a high damage actual cross map ranged attack that you can only avoid by line of sight. which is impossible if you are surrounded or caught in a bad place, which is pretty much every place. Hard to kill a group up close unless you are over leveled, they will poise through your attacks and stunlock you. Thousands of players probably quit this game after finding these enemies. In my playthrough I've only found a single enemy worse than these, the revenant. You could argue the followers aren't bad if you are careful. The revenant ... yeah.

The archers and the annoying rollcatch combos these guys have bring out my inner Andrew Jackson.

I could be at the bottom of the ****ing ocean and their arrows would still somehow hit me.
Tip for dealing with archers among Ancestral Followers: hit them once, even for tiny damage (like, with any bow and arrow), and they will no longer do their annoying power shot. Instead, they will use normal bow shots or try to close distance and use melee.

I think I found something interesting. They stop shooting their magic arrows after some point in the game. I have finished Raya Lucaria and killed Miriam. They no longer shoot their magic arrows. Is this known? Does anybody know why? I haven't managed to find any input on the matter.

The shaman definitely does not have an 100% drop rate, that cannot be right
- Anonymous
I wish they would drop their bow. Then, I shall give them despair!
Thin beast bones? The Ancestral Followers? You're having a laugh.

one flame of the redmanes weapon art already breaks their stance allowing to finish them off with a crit. pair this with the assassin's cerulean dagger talisman and you barely lose any fp. i have that ash of war on a miséricorde +24 (140 critical, highest critical in the game). works wonders!

I seriously hate these poorly thought out *******s first you have the damn snipers who can see you from anywhere and curve arrows to nail you around corners then you have the rock axe from rust wielding ones who can some how use a arm as a shield and tank damage while wearing sandals and a loincloth…definitely good design

Slight weakness (-10 absorption) to standard, slash, and thrust attacks.
The magic shaman variant has same weaknesses, but is additionally more resistant (20 absorption) to magic attacks
- Anonymous
They seem to have at least some weakness to holy damage, but I'm not 100% sure because I dont really fancy testing it with the same sword that does not have the Sacred Blade ash of war skill only to end up getting butchered if holy damage is effective because I'm having a really good run and I don't like the thought of starting from scratch back at the last site of grace.
- Anonymous
I haven't seen anyone point out the archers' weakness. If you can land a single hit on them (ranged or not), they can't shoot their Dweller arrows at you for across the level.
Once we figured that out, these critters became a *lot* easier. You still need to be aware of where they are, but you can more easily pick them off.

All variants of this enemy are so damn annoying. From the archers that jumpscare and 2 shot you, to the basic grunts who can somehow use their forearm like a shield and block 60% of your damage and somehow poise through attacks with only dirty-ass pelts on. Makes me glad you kill both their Deer Deities.

MFs overqualified to join the Vindicare Temple. The arrow bend around the corner and threaded like 6 needles just to get to me

You need to be really careful of their charging attack when fighting these things on horseback. The charge can hit you like 5 times within one or two frames, resulting in you getting dismounted and taking a significant amount of damage.

Would be marginally less annoying if the giant arrows sticking out of you didn't glow bright and flash all over the place while you're running from more of these things. Even normal greatarrows aren't this bad, since they don't assault your eyes if you play in any kind of dark or dim lighting.
- Anonymous
The vision of glowing ballistic on your head and it's a lot of damage.

It's like they told an intern to remake the carefully-designed Anor Londo archers, and they came up with this ****. "It's just as hard!"

Lost 20k runes to these ****ing stupid ass enemies, for an area thats supposed to have a cool boss, these dudes are NOT fun at all.
My experience is I get one hit in, and halfway through the stagger animation, the follower just breaks out of it and beats me into a bloody mess.

and they don't even have the decency to drop a nice amount of runes.

some of the most dogshit design fromsoft has ever blighted their games with. holy mother of **** what a terrible and anti-fun enemy. completely spit in the face of fromsoft's thoughtful and methodical design by having enemies that are invisible until you're right on top of them(so you can't plan an approach half the time), can aimbot you from the moon, have hyper armor, ALWAYS run in groups, and can combo you off of your horse. gulag whoever at FS thought up this enemy.
- Anonymous
Just a tip, the fully charged shots fired from the archers deal full physical damage, so if you struggle against them, just use a shield with high guard boost and you can tank their shots.
- Anonymous
Do they drop their double-edged axe made from moose antlers or this item does not exist in the game? Because I farmed ancestral followers with this weapon for several days and it did not drop. I got their other weapons, though.
- Anonymous
Thought these things weren't too bad. Then I found out about the archers lol
- Anonymous
If you shoot the sniper guys just once, they stop using the magic arrows and instead start using regular arrows (less damage and easier to avoid)
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
They also drop an axe called the "Jawbone Axe" made of teeth
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
They also drop the "Fur Raiment".
been trying to get their leggings for awhile now... those drops are very rare.
- Anonymous
They can also drop their Horns as helmet called "Great Horned Headband"

After fighting the ones in Nokron I'm pretty sure we're the bad guys. There they are, hanging out in the woods with more animal friends than a Disney princess when I show up on a goat horse to interrupt their prayer, start a bunch of fires, kill their women and murder their god - a giant deer spirit.
