Bayle The Dread Fight Strategy
The Best Tips for Bayle The Dread:
- Use the ?? Ash Summons
- Use the ?? Spell
- Bring Dragonwound Grease or preferably Dragon Communion Grease to more effectively deal damage (is Bayle treated as dragon in-game files? - might be a similar case as Dragonlord Placidusax)
Melee Users
Bayle The Dread can be found in the crater of the Jagged Peak, from the Jagged Peak Summit Site of Grace, you can walk straight ahead through the stone archway and Bayle will appear moments later. This boss deals Fire Damage and Lightning Damage, when he breathes fire, it will be a mixture of fire and lightning together. It also leaps and flies around the map putting a lot of distance in between.
There are a few attacks that Bayle performs that does not involve its fire/lightning breathing, which are its Fatal Bites, Fatal Stomp, and Tail Swipe. First, it will lunge forward and bite you for its Fatal Bites, it will bite you and smack you down repeatedly and it can lead to death immediately. So what you can do here is to prepare to dodge forward or to the side to avoid getting bit and avoid this fatal attack. Another one of its fatal attacks is its Fatal Stomp, Bayle will hover briefly glide to you, and land on you with brute force. When you see it flying you should prepare to run as far as you can or dodge to avoid this attack. Its next attack is its Tail Swipe, it will turn and swing its tail at you. When you see Bayle start to turn its body, you will need to dodge forward to avoid this attack. Its last physical attack is its lunging claw stab, it will slightly hunched back and then lunge towards you and stab you with its claw. You can dodge to the side or forward to get closer to it to attack it.
Next are his fire/lightning breathing attacks, it has a few that are all equally devastating. Bayle has an arena breathing attack where he will breathe out fire/lightning from one side to the other, another is its AoE breathing, where it will face down and breathe out fire/lightning. For these two attacks, you can perform dodge rolls to avoid the range of the attack. Its last breathing attack is its straight breathing attack, it will breathe out fire/lightning at you but you can easily dodge to the side as it will not follow you. After defeating Bayle The Dread, it will drop 490000 Runes and the Heart of Bayle.
Magic and Ranged Users
Casters should avoid using lock-on except for spell projectiles that rely on a target lock. Bayle will frequently close the gap and position his body over you, which can make the camera erratic, making dodging difficult. Additionally, aiming for Bayle's head can cause spells to miss despite his torso or tail being in range. Sorcery users can utilize Ranni's Dark Moon to weaken Bayle with frostbite. During Bayle's phase change and large AoE attacks, longer wind-up spells such as Comet Azur can be used to great effect. Faith casters can make use of Black Flame and Black Blade to whittle down Bayle's HP from a distance.
Bayle The Dread Attacks & Counters
Attack | Description | Counter |
Fatal Bites | Balye will bite you, pinning you in the animation, and throw you down several times and can be fatal. (This is a grab.) | When you start to see Bayle preparing to lunge at you with fire in his mouth, you can dodge forward or to the side to avoid this attack. |
Fatal Stomp | Bayle will leap and quickly hover over and stomp on you once it reaches you. The animation changes slightly in second phase and gains a secondary explosion around Bayle. | When you see Bayle up in the air, you can run as far as you can to avoid the stomp. Roll just as he reaches the peak of his jump. |
Sweeping Lightning Breath | Bayle will breathe out fire and lightning and sweep start from one end of the arena to the other. | While Bayle is breathing out fire and lightning, you can dodge roll through the fire wave effect to avoid receiving damage. |
Downward Lightning Breath | Bayle will breathe out fire and lightning below him to cover a large area under himself with lightning and fire. | You can dodge roll out of the AoE or run as far as you can to avoid the AoE. |
Beam Lightning Breath | Bayle will breathe out fire and lightning in your direction for a brief moment. | You can dodge toward either side to avoid the breath attack. A reliable way to dodge this attack is to walk either left or right and dodge the opposite way before the fire hits you. More than one roll is recommended to make sure the fire doesn't hit you afterwards. |
Lightning Spear | Bayle raises his right claw and charges it with lightning. He then slams it down into the ground, creating an explosion. In his second phase, this attack will summon secondary lightning strikes in a line infront of Bayle after the explosion. | Either run behind him or dodge just as it is about to hit. The secondary lightning strikes can either be dodged or even jumped over in some cases. |
Lightning Smite | Bayle will roar, calling down multiple columns of lightning onto the player that strike after a short delay. | This attack can be dodged by running or continuously rolling. |
Lunging Claw Stab | Bayle will lunge forward and stab with his claw. | When you see Bayle preparing to lunge, this will give you some time to prepare to dodge to the sides to avoid this attack. |
Lunging Bite Multiattack | Bayle will sweep with his right wing then left wing before biting forwards. | This attack can be avoided by running backwards or under Bayle's body. |
Lunging Stab Multiattack | Bayle will sweep with his right wing then his left wing before striking down with an explosive spear of lightning. In second phase, the final strike will also emit a secondary lightning exploding in a line going away from Bayle. | This attack can be avoided by running backwards or under Bayle's body. |
Tail Swipe | Bayle will spin and use his tail to perform a swinging attack at you. | You will see Bayle turning around, this is a sign to time your dodge roll to avoid receiving damage from this attack. |
Bayle's Tyranny | Bayle will stand still and channel, creating molten marks on the ground around himself. After the channel completes, Bayle and the marks will explode dealing significant damage, and Bayle will sprout spectral wings. This attack indicates the shift to the second phase and can be used freely after the transition. | Run back from Bayle, this is a good time to use ranged attacks for some safe damage. |
Dive Bomb | Following an Energy Explosion, Bayle can fly into the air, completing a half circuit of the arena before crashing down into the player. During this strafing run, Bayle will generate flame projectiles that will shoot at the player. He will almost always use this attack to after transitioning into phase two. | The flame projectiles can be dodged by running perpendicular to their incoming angle or by rolling. The dive bomb can be dodged by rolling into the Bayle as he slides past. |
Flying Strafe | Bayle will fly into the air and hover shortly before sweeping completely across the arena, breathing fire below that covers most of the arena. After the first pass, Bayle will hover again briefly before making a second pass with a more concentrated beam. The path of the beam will explode again shortly after the fire passes. | The first pass can be dodged by rolling through the incoming flames. The second pass can be dodged by rolling through the beam or to the side and then by rolling perpendicular to the path of the beam to avoid the explosion. |
Dreadful Lightning Spear | Bayle will raise his right claw like he does with Lightning Spear, but instead of slamming down, grows wings and charges it with even more lightning. After slamming down, it will cause an explosion and cracks will start forming in the ground, which will detonate, causing a MASSIVE explosion after a short delay. | You can roll both the initial and the secondary explosion, though the timing is a bit precise. You MAY be able to jump over the secondary one but I've only seen that happen with the Crucible Wings AOW. |
Bayle The Dread Lore, Notes & Other Trivia

Missed it the first time but the summon sign is on the left. Subsequently, re-summoning is a pain in the ass because this one has to be in the arena with a boss that can gap close within the first second. Just, why.
Been running summonless the whole DLC, summoned Igon just for the first match because I wanted to hear the epic speech... ended up making the fight a bit of a cakewalk at a higher fragment level. Oh well. Probably the coolest phase two transition I can recall!
- Anonymous
His right leg (left from our pov) is cut. Hitting him here will deal about twice the damage
- Anonymous
I like this boss. However, two attacks put this guy at b tier for me. The one where he breaths fire on the floor in a circle, and when he's in second phase I don't think you can reliably dodge his desperation move that resembles midir's. I think it would be understandable if people don't like this boss too.
- Anonymous
hitting him in the face does more damage just like other dragons. try using a long pierce weapon like bloody helice i got him in 5 attempts using it
- Anonymous
Great Boss, reminds me of Rykard. At Scadur Tree 12 or 13 on the original patch and +10 dragon slayer katana, was pretty easy, only like 7 tries
- Anonymous
Midir doesn't deserve to have his name tainted by being mentioned in the same sentence with this erratic epilepsy-inducing pile of garbage.
- Anonymous
People crying over the camera are either blind or they're not aiming for the head
- Anonymous
Midir remains the best dragon boss as Bayle is absolutely horrible F tier boss
- Anonymous
What the hell? There's not even enough chance to summon before he just obliterates you. What even is this?
- Anonymous
How to tell if a dragon boss in elden ring is gonna be fun:
Are you able to summon torrent?
If the answer is yes then the fight is automatically terrible
If the answer is no then congrats, you are fighting a cool dragon
- Anonymous
The moment this bastard creates wings out of pure HATRED is the most kino moment in all of Souls
- Anonymous
Loving it at the moment, just find it a bit less enjoyable than midir since it is less viable to attack the face directly
- Anonymous
Is the summon supposed to be a joke? Summon inside the fog gate, requiring a confirmation message as you're getting stomped on, deals no damage, and then dies.
- Anonymous
That 2nd phase transition rendered me speechless. It's something FromSoft always were good at but here they just went all out.
AND FRIGGIN IGON SHOUTING AT THE TOP OF HIS LUNGS BESIDES YOU
What a fight <3
- Anonymous
Fromsoft will give the dragon a thugshaker move before a visually readable telegraph
- Anonymous
for INT users, shard spiral melts him. Just don't lock the target. Sling the spell from his back if possible.
- Anonymous
Was he nerfed or something? I beat this boss incredibly easy, first try. I was expecting a phase two after I depleted his health bar but was very disappointed
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
gone from feeling impossible to being too easy , just kept spamming savage lion's claw and he kept getting bled/staggered didn't get to learn his moveset properly :(
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
Dragon Hunter's Great katana +10, Igon, and Mimic melted his HP, but we brought him down just before he had the chance to explode, and Im sure it would've one shotted me at full health.
- Anonymous
My god, this is history in the making, the first dragon boss fromsoft has ever made that was actually fun. It was thought impossible, and yet it finally happened.
- Anonymous
this boss need a health buff. Die way too fast, I don't think I have seen all of his move. He should be balance around you using the new dragon katana.
- Anonymous
Anyone have a consistent way of dodging the fire breath straight at you? I've tried sprinting, jumping, dodging, even bloodhound's stepping, but it just seems like it sometimes has way better tracking and gets me.
- Anonymous
Why must they make dragon fights where you can't lock on to the legs
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
str build with storm blade on a broadsword. gunned him down, you can too.
- Anonymous
Most bosses just make me feel like I don't get to play. This guy especially in second phase.
- Anonymous
where's my bayle's exposed bone fire lightning weapon fromsoft
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
Impenetrable Thrones proc'd bleed about every other turn with my stat spread, he died in about six casts. Easy fight.
- Anonymous
I can't stress this enough. Do NOT lock on. Get under him and go for his Lietenant Dan leg.

the key for ez kill is using pickaxe +24 & Ash of war Savage Lions Claw & eternal sleep pot will give u one critical window.
im use fireproof and pickled turtle neck awsell.
for more reward u may use gold scarab & golden horn im got more than 800k on this one

I used Dragon King's Cragblade because it was a weapon from his archenemy Placidussax and it did really good
This is Midir of elden ring but the fight is 10x better and cooler and the summonable npc is 100x more badass. Bayle does both have flashier attacks, is not so eager to flop away on the other arena end and does not take hours because of overinflated resistances. It is not boring unlike Midir, and this is why I LOVE this boss. Probably the coolest boss in ER now. For me it was definitely the most enjoyable one so far. And Igon, well, CUURSE YOU, BAAAYLE!!!
- Anonymous
Beat this with +13 skibidi fragments and 40 vigor. As always boiled crab and pearldrake talisman are best. Its pretty much just a fight of attrition, let Igon get the aggro, while you use Aspect of the Crucible wings to close the distance fast. Easy!
- Anonymous
CUUUUUUUUUUURSE YOU, BAYLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
- Igon
- Anonymous
Shard spiral with high intelligence build destroy any large boss especially dragons
he's missing a hind leg, I'd not noticed until trying on a melee character. tried targeting it primarily but it didnt seem to make any difference to me.
- Anonymous
Finley is a good spirit ash for this boss. Gives a fire resistance buff and does scarlet rot.
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
I give up. Just... I give up. Never had the camera give me motion sickness before.
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
thanks to one of below commenters , his injured legs takes more damage and it's safer to stay under him (just beware when he spews fire under him)
- Anonymous
Enjoyed the cool AF fight. Hate how awful the camera angle was.

How much damage did You do with a single r1? I was at scadu level 6 and only did 450 damage with a single one. I beat almost all bosses first try in this dlc except him and renalla but this dragon destroyed me like no one else in the game. He seemed to counter my build perfectly in every way and I didn’t want to switch my weapon. Camera is bad though in this fight if you lock on you barely see where the elemental damage comes out of the ground in phase two and if you don’t lock on and he flys away and breaths fire you don’t see it coming. 7/10 fight camera took a few points but everything else is perfect.
- Anonymous
I finally beat him solo without any form of summons at scadu level 6. only bloodhounds fang any good dodging god this boss was tough. Had to play nearly perfect. Great design but sadly the camera sucks. So from me a 7/10.
- Anonymous
Boltdrake+3, Flamedrake+3, and Pearldrake+3 practically trivialize his flame attacks.
- Anonymous
dragon hunter great katana's charged L2 melts this dude in no time and they force it down your throat on the way there. Definitely meant as the Serpent-Hunter of this area

I absolutely loved this fight and the spectacle and badass nature of Bayle. Easily my favorite dragon fight in the game. Make sure to use Flamedrake tali +3 and golden lighting protection or lighting liver for dmg negation, it makes a huge difference in survival. Also make sure to coat your armaments in dragon communion grease and use a pierce weapon for big counter dmg on jump attacks to his injured leg.
- Anonymous
Mogh's spear absolutely decimated him on the 2nd attempt. I wish I could retry. Loved Igon tho better than horncent.

- Anonymous
just like dancing lion, another amazing boss ruined by poorly developed camera
- Anonymous
Summoned Dung Eater puppet +9 and Igon and the fight didn't take long, not sure what happened but half of his health disappeared at some point, had scarlet rotted but I think it was something dung eater did.
- Anonymous
Trivia thing here: you can see remnants of his battle against Placidusax, two of the Dragonlord's heads are biting into Bayle's neck and back.
- Anonymous
I struggled with some of the bosses in DLC but this guy took me like 7 tries or so.
Summon Igon (also to finish his quest line)
Dragon Slayer great katana +10
Godfrey Icon
Shard of Alexander
Boltdrake Talisman
Firedrake talisman
Lock on his head and charge your L2's
Some light attacks
He is done for

- Anonymous
>has one leg
>is still more mobile than his mortal enemy Placidusax, who hadn't lost any legs
Incredibly based. Midir is happily snarling down from dragon heaven.
- Anonymous
Bayle is so powerful, it even managed to crash my PS5 with his AOE attacks.
- Anonymous
Igon is NOT useless. He has infinite HP (simply cannot die) and he splits aggro. This makes it way easier to win when you are significantly underleveled
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
i love when the screen fills with light and i can't see what the boss is doing (i don't actually love that)
- Anonymous
in their next game fromsoft should make a boss that's significantly bigger than you that's actually fun to fight
- Anonymous
Amazing performance by Christian Bayle. He even went the extra mile to rip his leg off, truly the best method actor dragon of all time.
- Anonymous
Struggled against this guy for a couple days, trying out so many of the new weapons on him. Then tried a basic Partisan with Spectral Lance on it, and won immediately. ****ing melted him. Didn't even blow through one whole mana bar using the Ash of War. Can't believe that worked.
- Anonymous
The hard counter to two handed strength builds especially below scadu level 7. I mean pure melee characters without blocking and if you do it solo it’s even worse lol.
- Anonymous
Hello, Rathian! Did you know Monster Hunter Wilds releases next year? Except it's now delayed to 2026 as Rathian escaped to Elden Ring and it has to be captured again, which takes approximately one year, give or take.
- Anonymous
NG+3, Level 250, Scad and ash level 7. Unga Bunga. If you suck at dodging his fire like I do, fire damage negation is your friend. I used the tree sentinel armor plus flame protect me and +3 flamedrake talisman. He went from nuking half my health at 60 vigor to only tickling a quarter. My tip is run in, summon Igon, stay near Igon til he takes agro and then summon mimic. Then lion hunt his ass/tail with big hammer.
Lock on is an enemy in this fight. So much easier to get nearer and wail on the tail. Broke his posture and got him down to less than a third health before his second phase. Reapply flame protect me as needed. Roll forward when he does his body slam. Let Igon/Mimic take aggro if you need to rebuff/heal.
Fight seemed like a ***** at first, but with the right setup, it is doable. Elden Ring gives you enough tools so that any challenge can be overcome using the right tactics.
- Anonymous
Lightning scorpion talisman, Godfreys Icon, Blood God's Exultation, Beloved Stardust. Buff with Golden Vow, Howl of Shabriri, Seppuku, Faith Knot/Lighting Tear. Run underneath him and use 3 Dragon lightning strikes while looking down for the easy nuke no hit
- Anonymous
Might be the only fight in Souls history where you are better off swinging at it's tail or leg(s), instead of targeting head.
He already has very little downtime between combos, but even then, he keeps his head low enough to reach it for 1 sec, after which he lifts it up for the rest of pause duration between combos, basically meaning you got nearly zero time to get damage in if you target it's head.
You are better off flanking him and chopping at his legs or tail.

Super cool boss and not too hard to learn his attacks. Camera can be kinda wonky when locked on tho. I did have a hard time with him because I was running a charged R2 setup with the Guts greatsword and his vulnerability windows are just a little too short to allow that to work. Could really only land charged R2s while poising through an attack. Otherwise pretty fun boss
- Anonymous
Such a cool boss. Not too hard to learn his attacks although I struggled a lot due to his vulnerability windows being a bit too short to get off a charged R2. Literally couldn’t land a single one with the Guts greatsword. Otherwise super fun
- Anonymous
Kind of surprised to see so many people saying Igon was useless (other than as your hype man), because he hard carried me through parts of that fight. I can’t offer any tips on fighting him, other than bonking him in the head or the injured leg. But between Bayle’s design, Igon’s fantastic delivery, the flashiness of the dragon-hunter’s great katana, and the sheer spectacle of it all, I had a great time.
- Anonymous
Cant stress enough how much having pierce damage helps. Grab a piercing weapon like a spear and upgrade it and the fight becomes a lot easier.
- Anonymous
I am a pure melee character at scadutree level 6 and this is the hardest boss in the game for me so far. I am not using any form of summons btw. He is relentless... so much hp and Health. I am using the blood hounds fang btw. He is also resistant the bleed even with the bloodflame blade I can’t bleed him

From really needs to stop making huge bosses if they aren't going to commit to making the hitboxes not trash. His basic forward bite attack hits you even when you're under his crotch. Smfh.
- Anonymous
- Anonymous
mid rolling fighting this dude is hell…id suggest just using armor light enough for light roll then stacking dmg resist tear , resist talis , vow and boiled crab…etc to prevent physical one shots.
because even with good armor and similar defensive setup you will just run out of pots due to bayle’s attacks having extremely unforgiving lingering hit boxes along with straight up RNG hitboxes for some of his attack.
- Anonymous
Contender for one of the best dragon fights in the franchise. Camera issues aside (but that’s for all big bosses), I like this boss.
- Anonymous
One of the only actual epic dragon fights, along with Placudiseax. Most other dragons are a big disparity in expectation vs. reality, where you're mostly just running to their feet or head nonstop and dodging easy swipes and stomps, but this one - visually, at least - truly feels like you've met a legend and a myth. Props to the visual effects team
- Anonymous
Fun fact: Scadutree Fragments do indeed matter. He really isn't that bad...at all. Also...use defensive items if you are dying crazy easily, most of them are simple to get. Boilprawn + Opaline Hardtear alone makes most fights far easier, just like the base game. Also, there's nothing wrong with running a shield...Bayle's attacks can almost all be blocked, given enough Stamina.

This fight makes up for Senessax completely, it is super cool.

If you cast Pest Thread Spears while standing underneath him they'll hit multiple times. My first cast staggered him and a few more casts killed him before he got up again...
This boss has proven to me that FromSoft really wanted to push lightning to its limits in Elden ring. We got:
Regular lightning
Ice lightning
Gravity lightning
Weird insanity-fire lightning
Bottled lightning perfume
and now just straight up Magma-fire lightning
All we need now is rot/poison lightning lmao

Not being able to lock on the body is my only issue with this guy. I don't want to lock on to his head bruh.
- Anonymous
Scadutree 16, Dragoncrest Greatshield Talisman, Flamedrake Talisman +3, Golden Vow and Golden Lightning Fortification. Also wore a mix of Beast Champion and Tree Sentinel armor. Got grabbed in the bite right out of the gate and it wasn't anything to worry about, certainly not a one shot kill. Didn't even do 25% of my health at 60 Vigor iirc. Worth noting that I always spam R1 and L1 to get out of grabs early if it's possible. Anyways just saying the wiki makes it sound like it does a huge amount of damage but it is ~highly~ relative to how prepared you are.
