Ashes of War in Elden Ring are special items that allow you to grant your armaments (Weapons and Shields) new Skills and Affinities. They're integral for creating Builds and adapting to the many Enemies and Bosses of The Lands Between.

How to Use Ashes of War in Elden Ring

With a Whetstone Knife, you can use Ashes of War to grant your armaments new Skills and Affinities at Sites of Grace. Alternatively, players may visit Smithing Master Hewg at the Roundtable Hold who offers the same services.

An armament can only have one skill; any skills it previously had will be removed.

An armament's type determines which skills or affinities it can have. Details on which armaments an ash of war is for can be found in its item description.

Some special armaments have unique skills and cannot be granted new ones.

Ashes of War can be repeatedly used without a cost, unlike similar items from previous FromSoftware titles (Embers, Stones, and Gems).

Cant wait for dlc to add madness and death infusions so they can proc in the three guaranteed hits of spinning slash.

      • Anonymous

Generally, I feel that the reason people complain about how spammy L2 is in its current state is because most ashes are way too non-committal. Recovery time on most should be increased so you can actually punish with a backstab. It’s crazy that many normal weapon moves, like great spear running R2, are back-stab punishable but then something like flaming strike is a guaranteed 2-400 damage, you roll through the follow up, and then… there’s no punish unless you do maybe a rolling attack. Probably split recovery time by weapon size, so giant hunt is quick on a spear but slow on a halberd. Anyways this should be for most ashes - L2 should be a dangerous commitment in a 1v1.

What about, Ash of War that can be used mid-air(on jump animation only), maybe like a mid-air spin slash, or mid-air thrust that can change direction mid-air?

          • Anonymous

I think it would be cool if some of these AoW would become modified if you're powerstancing.
I understand PvP is already a minefield, so this could be something you could only do in PvE.
Not only that, but it could be something that you earn in NG+.
DS2 did a great job of adding content for NG+, and I think ER could benefit from some NG+ incentives (other than getting two of a unique weapon).
Man, I'd love to storm call with both weapons I'm holding, that would be sick

            • Anonymous

Tbh all the flashy combat arts can just be replaced by using R1s and R2s in appropriate situations so I find kick and parry to be the most useful of these. Which is really funny to me since they've been around since DS1 as basic combat functions.

              • Anonymous

I hope in the DLC they add some more elemental and status AoW instead of them being locked behind legendary armaments. They need to give whips some love too as it's near impossible to put on on there.

                • Anonymous

Not a single blood ash for strike weapons... I know the black whetblade exists, but it would be nice to have something earlier into the game

                  • Anonymous

I hope the DLC brings "cast sorcery" and "cast incantation" ashes of war.
If from won't give us catalyst weapons, at least let us make our own.

                    • The AoW and skills pages should really be consolidated. I understand not every skill has a corresponding ash but you could just have a spot in the template that would be blank for those skills. I would do it but I wouldn't be able to do it in one sitting and the pages would be fuvked up in the meantime

                      • Anonymous

I personally just want Troll’s roar to be able to be used on katanas and curved greatswords. Such weapons need at least something to deal strike damage. Hell, just make it faster on everything that isn’t a colossal weapon/UGS

                        • Anonymous

Everytime a slightly interesting idea of a new ash of war comes up, there goes the random guy that complains about how it would affect balancing in the game. Like, motherf@/#&, that ship sailed since the day solo invasions dissappeared. Wtf would you know about balance and what in the actual f do you care? Stay in your dueling basements and leave the people who wants to have fun alone.

                          • Anonymous

I really want a "grab" type move for weapons other then lifesteal fist. Like impale the enemy and lift them up. Vlad the impaler style

                            • Anonymous

More ashes of war that give you a toolkit like Square Off would be great for those who like to roleplay a weapons master. Less of a one-trick, flashy gimmick and more utilitarian, variable kit. Was disappointed when I realised Stamp was two separate AoW. Alot of these even looks like they were meant to be comboed up but we're separate to give higher quantity. There's Unsheathe too, but I found that lacking as there's very little tactical difference between the attacks. Gives us parry back as one of the secondary inputs for it.

                              • Anonymous

Really hoping the DLC comes with some sleep and frenzy AoW’s. Even if its something simple like the ‘coat your armament in ___’ ones. Want some more variety past frenzy poking stick and sleepy sword.

                                • Anonymous

Sacred Order location needs to be fixed. Should actually mention that it's the Abandoned Coffin site of grace that you start from and that it's north-northwest rather than just north.

                                  • Anonymous

i wish there was an ash of war to inflict sleep buildup or coat your weapons in sleep, like poisonous mist or lightning slash

                                    • Anonymous

I so wish you could put these in your spell slots and switch between different skills with the same weapon without having to stop at a bonfire. You could "cast" any skill like a spell so long as you were using a weapon that it could be out on normally. That would allow for the kind of awesome, complex swordsman maneuvers that people do in PvP without having to item swap.

                                      • Anonymous

Do you know what would be the absolute win for the dlc? Ashes of war meant for powerstancing.

Like, the dual sword spinning attack the banished knights do in farum azula? Or the guard stance the cleanrot knights have with 2 spears? That kind of stuff would be dope.

                                        • Anonymous

I would love to see an AOW that allows you to use your weapon as a spell tool. Would be neat for spellsword and paladin builds.

                                          • Anonymous

I'm surprised they never changed more AoW to bypass shields/break guard. Since they removed the kick as part of the basic moveset and made WA like Square Off inaccessible to certain weapon types, fighting enemies with shields feels way more awkward than it probably should. I know they actually want you to use jump attacks, but that honestly doesn't work very well. So I slot Kick because my character's moveset is incomplete without it instead of something that looks cooler like Vacuum Slice.

                                            • Anonymous

ice spear is very good for a level 1 run. You can reduce the FP/mana use considerably so you get many uses. Many ways to boost its damage. Fully upgraded, I killed radahn without much trouble. Only down side is its short range. Goes well on the harpoon. You could cosplay with the anchor if you want.

                                              • Anonymous

Instead of just having 3 weapon slots we should also have the option of using those slots to equip 2 additional Ashes of War for any particular weapon

                                                • Anonymous

basically took the place of pyromancy as a form of low stat commitment magic. every standard weapon is like a catalyst with an attunement slot on it

                                                  • Anonymous

I want an ash of war where the tarnished picks someone up by their running them through and then slams them into the ground. That would be so cool.

                                                    • Anonymous

I really appreciate the 'Buff Weapon' Ashes of War (flame strike, sacred blade, lightning slash etc) is because they are a proactive process where the tarnished is using them as an attack while simultaneously buffing their weapon. So much more engaging than stand still and slowly apply a bit of paper over the weapon while you can't do anything.

I'm a little confused. Lightning ashes can be used to grant a weapon the sacred affinity, but their l2s still scale exclusively with dex making it a poor choice for faith builds? The fire affinity scales with strength and the flame art affinity scales with faith, but fire ashes can grant the flame art affinity and flame art ashes can grant the fire affinity? So if I have something like Flame of the Redmanes but I'm using it on the flame art affinity, is the l2 going to scale with strength of faith?

                                                        • I want a dragon punch/shoryuken ash of war for fists. And I mean the actual thing, where it comes out extremely quick and absolutely messes up people who like to spam jump attacks ON REACTION.

Even if it had absolutely no hitbox in front of you, just give it an abnormally giant hitbox that extends well above the player's fist. I want to let those jump attack spammers know that they are not safe, and that I can invade their safe space both in-game and irl with ease.

Alternatively, give me Anti-Air Deathblow from Sekiro.

I need The Kaiden Sellsword 2h Curved sword parry / strike!! Even if its a block / strike like Carian Knight sword charged R2, the look of it is really a beautiful animation... Since the very first one I fought I was like ooo that looks mint I need thier sword so I can do that - then after getting one as a summon I became jealous and eventually started making him solo Royal Revenants, but he just smokes them like a cheap cigar :( I love you My Sellsword bastard.

                                                            • Anonymous

I doubt it will happen, but I hope we get some Fai/int affinities in the DLC as those builds could really use it.

                                                              • Anonymous

I would give away half of the catacombs/caverns and the entire Snowfield + Haligtree area in exchange for more unique movesets and ashes of war instead of the 10y old r1, r2 from Demon Souls. Not to mention the entire mess the smithing stones system is compared to Somber, which goes against the ashes of war variety. Also, Sekiro is a game that exists, but Miyazaki seems to have forgotten that.

                                                                • Anonymous

On the location for Sword Dance all it says is, "near the minor erdtree in southwest Liurnia. This is a little vague and not entirely accurate as you cant actually see the minor erdtree from the location of the scarab. A more accurate description would be that it was found, "on the path leading down to Roads-End Catacombs."

                                                                  • Anonymous

I want a mikiri counter ash of war. Would be fitting considering how powerful thrusting and pokey attacks are in pvp.

                                                                    • Anonymous

Enable the Magic spell AoWs (Maybe Gravitas and WoD too) to be put on staffs. Right now, there is literally 1 staff AoW, and it's completely useless when actually put onto staffs - bizarrely, putting Spinning Weapon on swords / spears / etc. makes for a fairly good L2 on most of them, but put it on a staff? lolnope: damage is beyond pathetic.

                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                        • Anonymous

                                                                          • Anonymous

More weapon types need unique ashes of war. It's insane how much love certain weapon types get, whereas the whips have zero ashes of war that use the whips to attack. It's crazy because they already have decent whip animations with things like the fire giant whip or the lava whip, but for whatever reason there is no ash of war variant of either that can be applied to standard whips.

                                                                            • Anonymous

Here's an idea. People do miss hybrid weapon catalysts. But instead of making those, i think it would be nice to implement a talisman that converts equipped spells into ashes of war, and the weapon's affinity would change with the last weapon art chosen. So catalysts, seals, etc couldn't be used and stat requirements would still be in effect, but as ashes of war at the cost of a talisman slot.

It would take quite the headache to balance, but just imagine a great spear chaining charge forth + gelmir's fury.

                                                                              • Anonymous

It would be great if there existed legendary war ashes similar to legendary armaments and talismans, but having them would only create another achievement that would obstruct obtaining the platinum.

                                                                                • Anonymous

Wish weapons arts were equipped in spell slots. Not sure if it would make the game more busted or less busted, but it would make it more interesting, I think.

                                                                                  • Anonymous

For anyone wondering, Twinblades can accept the most Ashes of War (56), followed by Greatswords (53) and Straight Swords/Katana (52).

                                                                                    • Anonymous

                                                                                      • Anonymous

                                                                                        are you kidding me.

                                                                                        • Anonymous

                                                                                          • Anonymous

                                                                                            • Anonymous

                                                                                              • Anonymous

Even faith users on sacred have sacred blade. Every non physical damage type except for magic gets one. Flame strike, sacred blade, chilling mist, poison moth flight, lightning slash. "But INT users can buff with magic weapon, and frozen armament!" And faith users can too with electrify armament, blackflame blade, bloodflame blade, orders blade.

                                                                                                • Anonymous

There's a lot of info on this page for which I'm grateful. But as a relative newcomer what I want to know is which of these is best for certain situations. I'm now standing before Sorcerer Rogier and he has 3 ashes of war to sell, but I haven't the foggiest if any of them are useful to me. It's all a bit amorphous. I need damage numbers. Makes me think - "Why bother changing up? Stick with Bloody Slash." That's one of the first ones I got.

                                                                                                  • Anonymous

                                                                                                    • Anonymous

As in; does a spear with spinning weapon do thrust damage per hit? Does a katana do slash damage if you use stormcaller? Does a hammer use strike if you use Stamp (upward cut)?

                                                                                                      • Anonymous

Hear me out. What if instead of applying ashes onto weapons, you could slot them in the spell slots and applicable weapons used them akin to traditional spells? It would certainly feel better than having multiple copies of a weapon with different ashes in the inventory.

                                                                                                        • Anonymous

I can't post this as a reply for some reason, but there was an exploit that allowed people to put any ash onto any infuseable weapon regardless of weapon class and use them in online play, for example you could have Square Off on greatswords or Unsheathe on halberds, the "process" added in the patch flags those glitched weapons as invalid and reverts them to the default ash when equipped

                                                                                                          • Anonymous

Patch 1.07: "Added a process to remove the Ash of War from weapons that cannot notmally be combined with certain Ashes of War." Do we know what precisely that is? I thought it might allow us to remove Ash of War locked to unique Weapons, so it has none. This would be useful for the purple Torch perhaps, as offhanding it forces you to use it's unique Skill instead. But I haven't found this "process" yet- did I misunderstand it or is this something yet to be discovered? And if it's my lack of understanding, then what specifically got affected by this? I would appreciate if someone could ellaborate on this!

                                                                                                            • Anonymous

Quality infusion may as well not even exist. You don't see significant gains over heavy or keen until close to 99/99 and they never become so significant, it's more like a "oh I get 12 more AR on quality than keen now that I've invested 40 more levels in str, guess I'll go quality" situation. But even then! Some weapons get +10% poise damage when using their "intended" affinity, like Heavy on most great hammers or Keen on most curved swords. Nothing gets bonus poise damage with quality. The only reason to level both Str and Dex so much is if you're going for max level or you really like Bloodhound's Fang. You can meet base Dex requirements for every weapon you want to use, put the difference in Str, infuse everything Heavy and hit harder than a quality build otherwise.

                                                                                                              • Anonymous

In the age of the ancient the world was unformed, shrouded by fog. A land of gray R1 spammers, straight swords and everlasting stamina. But then came Elden Ring and with Elden ring came new mechanics. Horse-riding and walking, bonfires and graces and of course, L2 spam and R1 spam. Then, from the R1 they came and founded the souls of the noobs. Irithyll Straight Sword User, first of the R1...Dark Sword Fallen Knight and their children of edginess... Pontiff Knight Curved Sword Guy, the Lord of Whiff Punishes and his faithful Meta Slaves... And the Furtive GUTS Cosplayers, so easily forgotten.... With the strength of R1 they challenged the L2. PKCS Man's mighty roll catches peeled the L2 Spammer's 10 vigor. The Edgelords edge-walked so hard the L2 Spammers slit themselves and died of cringe. Irithyll Straight Sword User unleashed a miasma of R1s and Frostbite. And Rivers of Blood user the nerfed betrayed his own and the L2 spammers were no more...

And thus began the age of R1. But soon, the R1 will fade and only L2 will remain. Even now, noobs see not R1 but only endless L2 spam. And amongst the living are seen the Accursed Ashes of war spam. Yes, indeed. The Ash of War spam brands the noobs. And in this land, L2 spammers are corralled and sent to the north to await the death of Elden Ring pvp.

Quality is only good at using many different weapons and while that's fun, I don't feel it's okay to give all others these powers and yet give quality nothing in terms of infusions choices. Maybe a DLC will give us a new element to the table, but it's highly unlikely. But it sure would make the quality a much better choice.
